Well, I suppose I’m just a glutton for punishment, but with the recent firestorm over the Presidents immigration reform speech I have decided to present my on “Immigration Reform” suggestions, so here goes: Job number one: SECURE THE BORDER!!! That’s right, seal and secure the border; this means a physical barrier with check stations every few miles along this barrier, any talk of “Immigration Reform” (or National Security for that matter) is ridicules as porous as our borders are at this time; as it stands the “criminal element” is coming and going across the border at their leisure while innocent men, women ,and children who wish nothing more than to obtain a better life for themselves and their families are dieing trying to “sneak” into the country, at least if we had “check stations this would give them a safe place to come, where they could register to become a citizen or express why they wish to come to the United States. Will this cost a lot of money? You bet it will, but it might also produce some of those “shovel ready” jobs the president promised us back in 2008. Number two: Simplify the process for becoming a citizen From what I’ve been told from some of my friends whom I used to work with who were recent arrivals to the United States it’s currently a real hassle to become a legal citizen. This should not be the case; I’m sure I’m going to over simplify this..but, these are the requirements I’d like to see: #1. Register for employment #2. Register for classes in English (good, bad, right or wrong English is the language that business is done in this country) #3. Resister for classes concerning our customs and laws. #4. Have a criminal background check And that should be about it. NOW FOR THE BIG ONE What to do with the undocumented citizens who are already here Offer a temporary amnesty The length of this amnesty could be up for debate. I’m guessing around 3 to 5 years. After the borders have been officially “secured” set a specific date, and give this amnesty to everyone whether they’ve been here 10 years or 10 days. During this time any “undocumented” person should begin the process to become a citizen, apply for dual citizenship, or apply for a temporary work or student visa. After this “temporary amnesty” any remaining “undocumented” person would be contacted and given a final opportunity to apply for citizenship or temporary status. Deportation would be a last resort. Well those are my ideas, and as I mentioned previously, I’ve probably over simplified the situation, but we must begin somewhere. “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” tb
