Well, I sure remember Sally Flowers. Sure says Im old as dirt! Also, I remember Ruth Lyons, who is mentioned in this article. In fact, I went with Mom and my Aunt Ann in the late 50s or early 60s to her show in Cincinnati and I won the smile award. Columbus Dispatch, The (OH) - Wednesday, February 15, 1989 Deceased Name: TELEVISION PIONEER SALLY FLOWERS DIES Sally Flowers, who starred on one of the first locally produced entertainment shows on Columbus television, died Monday in a nursing home in Washington Court House, Ohio. She was 81. Flowers was born Lillian Bernice Rodgers in Tallula, Ill., April 26, 1907. She built a strong following in Columbus with a variety-talk show called Meetin Time at Moores, which aired on WLWC-TV (now WCMH-TV, Channel 4) during the 1950s and with Dialing For Dollars, which ran during the 1960s on WTVN-TV (now WSYX, Channel 6). There was a time when she was as popular in Columbus as Ruth Lyons was, said Mervin Durea, a former program director at WLWC. Along with Billy Scott, Flowers was host of Meetin Time at Moores, which hit the airwaves shortly after WLWC signed on in 1949. The show, which ran through 1958, was one of the first live entertainment shows on Columbus television. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were among the guests. Like many shows of its kind during that era, it aired live before a studio audience. You either did it live or you didnt do it at all. And Sally shined as an entertainer, Durea said. The show vaulted Flowers to the top of the entertainment field in Columbus and opened the door for other local television shows. Joe Holbrook, a longtime WBNS-TV personality, said, Sally was really the toast of the town in Columbus. She had the most popular variety show of her day, and we at the competing stations were aware of her. Franklin County Commissioner Hugh DeMoss, a former news anchor at WLWC, worked with Flowers briefly. She was a real salty dog, a nice lady and a good performer, DeMoss said. Flowers was co-host of Dialing For Dollars with Gene Fullen, who died in 1971. The two interviewed guests and chatted with viewers by telephone. She and Gene complemented each other, said Ruth Fullen, Genes widow. They each had their own following in Columbus, but I think people enjoyed watching them work together. Fred Von Stade, former general manager of WTVN-TV, said Flowers and Fullen sometimes fought over top billing. That was typical, though. She had a big following and so did Gene, said Von Stade, now retired and living in Cincinnati. After Dialing For Dollars, Flowers was host of radio talk shows at stations around Ohio, including one in Chillicothe. A couple of years ago, failing health forced her to retire. Flowers married twice, first to David Wood and then to William Nixon. Both men are dead. She is survived by a daughter, Daveen Moats of Washington C.H., and a son, David Wood of California. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Smith-Moore Funeral Home, Bainbridge, Ohio
