Well Warriors it has been quite some time since I have wrote a medical post. Have to stop napping like this. We have quite a few new faces here. I say welcome to you all. My disclaimer First of all I am NOT a doctor. I am a regular person who offers my opinion on medical conditions & medical facts when available. Todays topic is something I have never wrote on before. Several million suffer from this at one point or another in our lives. I am talking about insomnia. Some of the facts I am going to put up are resources from several different sites. The following is one of the definitions as described by Dr. Mehmet Oz. A well known Cardiologist. At some point, weve all experienced at least a few nights of too little or restless sleep. Many of us are familiar with the consequences of one or more sleepless nights such as sluggishness, poor concentration, irritability, and changes in appetite. For the majority of cases, it takes just a day or two to catch up on restorative sleep. Yet for up to half of the population, lack of sleep can turn into a more serious problem: insomnia. While experts may disagree over the exact definition, insomnia is typically characterized by the duration of symptoms, not the specific amount of sleep one gets. Individuals may have vastly different sleep practices and require different amounts of sleep, but true insomnia usually involves difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep for at least one week or more. Even more troublesome, the causes of insomnia remain a mystery for many sufferers. Its not a disease in and of itself -- its a symptom of another underlying problem. Therefore, the key to treating insomnia involves unearthing the root cause. There are multiple types of insomnia. Insomnia can be classified as transient, acute, or chronic. 1. Transient insomnia lasts for less than a week. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression, or by stress. Its consequences – sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance – are similar to those of sleep deprivation. 2. Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of less than a month. Insomnia is present when there is difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or when the sleep that is obtained is non-refreshing or of poor quality. These problems occur despite adequate opportunity and circumstances for sleep and they must result in problems with daytime function. Acute insomnia is also known as short term insomnia or stress related insomnia. 3. Chronic insomnia lasts for longer than a month. It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. People with high levels of stress hormones or shifts in the levels of cytokines are more likely to have chronic insomnia. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue. Chronic insomnia can cause double vision. You might ask what is the most typical age group affected by Insomnia? Insomnia affects people of all age groups but people in the following groups have a higher chance of acquiring insomnia. Individuals older than 60 History of mental health disorder including depression, etc. Emotional stress Working late night shifts Travelling through different time zones. So if you or someone you love is suffering from insomnia. Talk with your doctor. It could be there is an underlying cause. Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy post. Jason
