Well, What a game last night at Jack Speare Park. Taringa took a shock 3 – 0 lead within the first 15 minutes against our rivals from a higher division, as the pace of Taringa’s attacking players caused the defenders from the BPL side all sorts of problems. First up Shane Scicluna sprung the off-side trap and blasted a shot which was too hot to handle for Brendan White, the Logan keeper and found its way into the back of the net. Then goal scoring machine Steven Chester expertly controlled a ball on the edge of the box, turned and shot in one movement leaving the Logan custodian, diving well after the ball had already rippled the back of the net. Minutes later a corner dropped in the 6 yard box and Chester was again on hand to tap in for Taringa’s third. Logan FC and most of the crowd, including hardened Taringa supporters were in a state of shock. Logan reverted to tried and tested tactics in an effort to get back into the game, getting the ball wide quickly, overloading Taringa’s wide defenders and getting balls into the box for their tall front line. This tactic started to prove effective as wave after wave of crosses peppered the Taringa 6 yard box, each one becoming more and more dangerous. Taringa were obviously staring to feel the pressure of the relentless balls into the box, with Bryce Mengel in goal pulling off a series of excellent saves. The pressure however proved too much and Logan got their goal, with far post header off a pinpoint cross from the left, initially well saved by Mengel but eventually bundled in by Logan’s Randall. Logan were back in the game in the 27th minute. The game then evened out for a period with more midfield possession as both teams took stock. Unfortunately this lull took its effect on the Taringa defence with a innocuous ball into the box from a free kick slipping through Mengel’s hands into the net unassisted by a Logan player, just before half time. The second half began as the first ended and a defensive mix up between Taringa two central defenders saw the ball fall to the dangerous Daniel Clark with only Mengel to and the game was even at 3 – 3. The game was now end to end and a quick counter attack from Taringa saw Paul Ellis find Steven Chester in space down the left hand side running towards the clubhouse end. Chester was brought down in the box by Logan’s recovering right back, as evidenced by the massive divot next to where the foul took place, which was located at least two meters inside the penalty area. The referee blew for the foul and then inexplicably was influenced by the Logan players to move the location of the infringement outside of the box, denying a clear penalty much to the derision of the clubhouse balcony crowd. With an obvious goal scoring opportunity spurned by a poor decision, Taringa battled on, but were soon down 4 – 3 as one of the repetitive crosses into the box found one of the much vaunted Logan junior products, Johan Sundstrom unmarked at the far post to nod in unchallenged. It seemed the tide had turned as Taringa’s play started to become more laboured and Logan’s superior fitness and speed across the park snuffed out many promising Taringa attacks. Even when Taringa found players in goal scoring positions the shots were either scuffed or straight at White in goal. The introduction of Jack Marchant on the right for the home side however was starting to reap some dividends with some added pace causing Logan a few more problems, as the game wound down to the 90 minute mark. Then out of nothing, with Logan’s support staff packing up ready for the long drive home, it was Marchant who whipped in a ball behind the Logan back four to find the Mr Reliable and Steven Chester calmly controlled and chipped the onrushing White, to send the game into extra time, with the roar of the Taringa faithful waking up sleeping kids all over the neighbourhood. Extra time however proved too much for the Rovers, with weary legs really taking their toll. Logan sticking to their tactics, were able to find wide players in space early and in a repetition of early goals a rocket of a cross found Petar Kostovski at the near post to head home. Whilst Rovers were out on their feet they battled hard and chased every ball as the BPL side started playing for time with still 15 minutes to play. In a final push Rovers had a succession of long throws and corners aiming for their tall timber, but in the end it was to no avail, with a valiant Taringa Rovers going out of the Canale Cup 4 -5 after extra time to Logan FC.
