Well. Where to begin on todays disaster? Spent the morning apologising to the bank for the mortgage company cock-up. Think we may have got away without being disembowelled this time. Then decided to have a day at the seaside. All was going really well, sunshine, a walk on the beach, superb ice cream in a seafront caff. Then a drive to a mountain village for a look round. Halfway up a steep road out of the village, the car died. Dead, ceased to exist ( in a mechanical sense) alternator gone. All the electrics stopped. We rolled backwards onto a grassy knoll where we sat while I listened to Chris berating me for persuading him to use that car, when we knew it had a faulty alternator, just to use up the petrol. Mea culpa. Then I stopped a nice man in a van with piercings all over his face who took Chris to a nearby garage. The most miserable, unsympathetic mechanic turned up and confirmed what we already knew - that the car was dead. He then directed Chris to freewheel down the hill while stopped the traffic at the crossroads and we came to a halt in a dodgy part of town. Cut a long story very short, we eventually got the miserable bad tempered scrote to put our car on his truck and take us, for €56 in advance, back to the lovely Bernard (36 kms away) who had already agreed to buy the car. We both deeply love Bernard who could not have been kinder, while trying to stifle laughter at les Anglaises Stupide. He called us a taxi and charming Olivier, the taxi driver said it was ok for Ebby to go in his pristine cab. Ebby was so delighted at this that she promptly sat in the muddiest puddle she could find. Olivier was still charming and took us home via a cashpoint so we could pay him. I am now getting outside a bottle of Paul Simmonds and Susan Currans excellent red wine and trying to convince myself we will look back at all this someday and laugh. Chris Green says, at least life with me is never dull.
