Well a politician made a mistake today. He came into my work and introduced himself to me. Ive been trying to stay away from politics lately, but hey, when they walk right up to me and stick their hand out for a hand shake, well, what can I say? So he walked in with a binder full of his flyers, introduces himself to me as Ed moats, shakes my hand, and asks me to vote for him. Said hes running for congress. Ok. So I say Well, maybe Id vote for you, but Ive got this one issue thats kept me from voting for anyone in a while now, maybe you can tell me how to solve it? (Not a legal issue of any kind, just procedural.) Hey, he wants me to vote for him so he can represent me in Washington, DC right? He cant represent people if he doesnt know their issues, right? If I were him, at the very least I would have seen this as an opportunity to say something like Maybe when I get to congress this is something I need to look into. But not Mr. Moats, nope. Without even giving me a chance to state my issue, all he said was Really I just want to drop off some flyers then he turned away and headed over to my manager to give him the flyers. I just said Ok, I guess you dont want to hear about it then. and walked out the door with the trash I was taking to the dumpster. You know, sometimes politicians can blow people off like that, and sometimes its not the best of ideas. Ive found Im pretty good at getting letters to the editors published in newspapers and magazines. In fact, Ive never written one that didnt get published. So my letter is already written and is being emailed to every newspaper in Whatcom county (where I live). After that, Ill send them off to the big papers in places like Seattle, Spokane, etc. Sorry to do that, Mr. Moats. But if you cant even pretend to acknowledge that a constituent is talking to you, you probably arent going to be a very good representative of the people in Washington.
