Well, at LONG last I finally felt it was THE perfect moment to watch “South American 7 – The Experience With Debbie Gibson.” It’s the fabulous documentary made by some of my most fabulous, most die hard “DebHeads” who call themselves the #SouthAmerican7 (SA7)! I had just returned home after an awesome trip back east to my birthplace of Brooklyn to perform a Christmas Concert - and, alas, who was in attendance? None other than Carlos of the SA7!!! I then spent time with my family…this year saw the reuniting of ALL 4 sisters/Gibson Girls in one place at one time! Feeling emotional and sentimental and reflecting on the year, I settled in for 2 hours of reliving one of my favorite moments ever - my first full length concerts in Chile - and also to gain some insight and perspective from my long time fans points of view. What a treat! Merry Christmas to ME! LOL I am not going to go into full detail here, as I want any of you reading this to please check out the film, which is the ultimate labor of love. Even if you skip the bulk of my concert footage, watch the beginning and end to see and hear some wonderful stories of friendship and loyalty. Much like the SA7 have expressed to me that they finally got to meet me - the person behind the records - I got to meet these wonderful people! The word fan is short for fanatic. It can often have a negative and disconnected connotation. I use it lovingly but that said, I am always aware that behind the scream or tweet or letter of every “fan” is a person who goes about their day and has a story to tell. To know that I somehow have been a part of the landscape of their lives never ceases to amaze me. SO, to get to know Gaby, Mariano, Brian, Carlos, Fernando, Ariel, Gabriel, as well as their crew - Aldo and Fernando - is truly an honor. I was first struck by how cool and normal they all are! A bunch of fun folks hanging out together, connected by a shared musical taste! To watch this film was also bittersweet for me. I watched recalling how with each meet and greet I did, I hid a lot of physical pain that came even with bending slightly to give hugs. I remember asking Elizabeth who works with me to please somehow move the line around to the other side of me to even out the pain that came with leaning in for pictures at the Movistar Arena. I remember feeling like I dont know how I am going to get through not only one, but also TWO performances, having just been home wringing an illness out of my body that was nowhere near gone yet. It was hardly like me to NOT feel prepared. The lesson in this was that in preparing as best as I could, and in truly showing up - open and vulnerable to the audience - I could not go wrong. And, I was reminded in watching the Sideshow performance at Blondies - which was an intimate show before the 12,000 seat arena - that it is some higher power as well as the spirit of people, like the SA7, that carry us artists always … especially in challenging times. Brian put this whole thing together and each of his co-stars was diligent about capturing everything from their journey to their goodbyes. Some travelled further than others and the ultimate bonding that happened was the most heartwarming thing for me to watch! I cannot tell you ALL how moved I have been from the time you made me your first video gift!” It is the best present I could ever receive! I hold the memory of those concerts and our visits dear and am so glad I now have it captured on film forever! I wish you all nothing but the best this coming New Year and always! And to ALL reading this, thank you all for being a part of my life… it is why I do what I do! Thank you and Happy New Year everyone! X DEB youtu.be/YnNIrdftIek
