Well, covering the tomato plants proved to be a success. The plants that we covered are still alive - and blooming. Weve decided to declare victory on this, take the plastic down (when it stops raining and the plastic dries out). Next year, we are going to cover part of the patch earlier and with a sturdier structure. One idea is to put a hoophouse over part of the patch before the heavy rain comes and secure the hoophouse so that it isnt blown around by the wind. Longer term, this would allow us to plant them in the garden much earlier in the year - maybe to even direct seed them in the ground.
