Well, darn. I just have gotten used to writing 2014, and now I have to get used to writing 2015. On the other hand, I like odd numbers better than even numbers, to the extent that I always make sure my car tag has an odd number on it. Hubby gets the even-numbered tags, because he doesnt care (thats also the reason why the tag on the blankets and sheets are always on his side of the bed; he doesnt care, and I do. I hate tags. I cant sleep if a tag is on my side of the bed.) Those are my all-the-time superstitions, though I prefer to call them preferences. I prefer not to have a tag on my side of the bed, and Im willing to pitch any number of hissy fits to make sure it never happens. The on-this-day-only superstitions are that, to ensure having enough money during the coming year, we must eat greens and blackeyed peas and ham hocks. My greens of choice are collards, cooked with country-style ribs, which substitute for ham hocks. Im not sure what a hock is, but Im pretty sure I dont want to eat it. Maybe Ill go look that up; a hock might be added to my diet. Maybe. Anyway, the greens are for folding money, the peas are for cents, and you dont ignore those because cents add up to dollars. The hock is for luck. (Im now embarrassed that an Alabama girl doesnt know what a hock is; Im ashamed enough that Im definitely looking it up as soon as I finish this post. Evidently hocks didnt figure large in my childhood.) LJ said that another superstition she heard is that you dont do laundry on New Years Day, or youll wash someone out of your life. No laundry today! I can go with that. Though if I ever find out a way to target my laundry to one specific person, I might be doing laundry every New Years -- not that I have anyone I want to get rid of, but you never know when the need will arise. Anyone know any other New Years superstitions? Happy New Year, and have a lot of hocking good luck! Dang, that word doesnt sound good even in a good context! -- Linda H.
