Well everyone, unfortunately, it appears that our efforts to persuade Ancestry to find an alternative to the destruction of their Y-DNA and mtDNA databases has fallen on deaf ears. Theres no telling how many of our recent ancestors may have submitted samples, but in thinking that their data would be safely stored away for the benefit of future generations to use, never saw the need to save the data on their own. And now, as I understand it, these invaluable resources are, as of midnight, lost forever. Personally, I find it unfathomable that a corporation in a niche as specialized as genetic genealogy would show such complete disregard for those of us who sought an alternative. The comments posted by many of the over 350 people in our Facebook group (Stop Ancestrys DNA Dump) were passionate and thoughtful, and in some cases, heartbreaking. The same can be said of comments posted by the over 1,200 people that signed our online petition. As a last resort, several of the genealogy industrys leaders with an interest in genetics, among them Dr. Tim Janzen, Katherine Borges, Blaine Bettinger, CeCe Moore, Maurice Gleeson and Judy Russell, took the time to draft a letter that was sent to Ancestry executives months ago. All we asked for was consideration...to look for simple, economical way to save data that didnt need to be destroyed. To all of you who posted comments, supported our position and tried to make a difference, I sincerely thank you. In my mind, our efforts were not in vain, even if they were ignored. I will sleep fine tonight knowing that we did our best in an attempt to preserve our ancestry...NOT our Ancestry.
