Well family and friends here is the opening sequence for my book. I want to thank Carolyn Cossey Pitchford for her help with editing. Criticism please…. HOW TO PUT THE “CAN” IN CANCER A personal story of courage, hope and strength for cancer patients and their caretakers Written by David W. Fleming Editor Carolyn Cossey Pitchford In life, you will realize there is a role for everyone you meet. Some will test you, some will use you, some will love you, and some will teach you. But the ones who are truly important are the ones who bring out the best in you. They are the rare and amazing people who remind you why it’s worth it. ~~ Unknown Cancer, cáncer, ראַק, cancro, آفة مهلكة, krebs, 癌症; it’s such an ugly word no matter in what language it is spoken. Just the mere mention of the word conjures up in our mind vile images of pain, agony and suffering. According to the American Cancer Society it is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Their data estimates the odds to a numbing figure of about one-half of all men and one-third of all women will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetimes. When the day comes for a person to hear the words, “You have cancer,” everything else in life becomes small stuff. There is absolutely nothing anyone can do to prepare themselves for those words. It will feel as if time itself has stopped for a few short moments as your mind immediately goes into a surreal shock mode. Hundreds of various feelings of fear run the gamut of extremes throughout your mind as the body’s survival instinct kicks in full force. It may seem like an eternity before the sobering reality finally returns. The mind is a powerful organ in the human body. There are only two ways to react from such a fearsome diagnosis. You can cave-in and have a pity party or you can roll up your sleeves and fight your way through it to the end with the hopes of gaining remission status. I have noticed those individuals who elected to host their self-induced pity parties are more likely to be among the first victims to succumb to the disease and die. They want everyone to know they have cancer and to take pity upon them. They lack the courage to fight and the strength to survive. They sit around and moan and groan “Oh Lord why me?” While those who refuse to give up the ghost so eagerly persist onward to fight a daily battle for their continued existence. I know about these things. My name is David Fleming and I am a fighter and a multi-cancer survivor. Throughout the pain, the surgeries, and the unknown, I have used my sense of humor to give me the strength to overcome the odds. Wit has allowed me to summon every fiber of my being, to stay one step ahead of this wicked illness of agony and pain, to see who has the last laugh. My hope for all cancer victims who read this book is to understand: You must stay positive and focused at all times while maintaining a good sense of humor. After all, laughter is the best medicine I have found. So here goes….
