Well folks, here we are. The close of the week before the big dance. So heres Mike Bs last minute tips for GenCon. 1. If it sneaked up on you, and you really arent ready, take a moment to triage. Identify the tasks you just arent going to get to, and prioritize the ones you can. And remember, dont freak if you have to wing it for some of your events. Dont fear improvisation. Relish it! 2. Start thinking about the clothes you are going to wear. Function over appearance. If youre going to do marathon games, its best to wear some well-worn clothes that are comfy, not new duds. Dont bring new shoes, instead figure on some well-worn and comfy kicks. 3. Its a little late to get in prime shape for all the walking, but doing about 3 miles of walking a day will get your tendons and feet used to all the walking. Its no fun getting shin splints and barkin dogs at the convention because youre not used to all the walking. 4. Start really nailing down your budget. Pick out the big meals you plan to do, and research how much they are going to run. ID how much money you are allowed each day for purchases. Splurging is fine -- you are on vaycay after all -- but dont let it reach the point where youd rather wrestle a tarrasque than open your online bank statement on the 18th... 5. Take a minute to brush up on some of the games you plan to play, unless you are a beginner. If you ARE a beginner, dont sweat it, and dont clutter up your mind by cramming -- the event GM will bring you up to speed. 6. Unpack and triple check all the equipment for your games. GenCon is not the place you want to buy up supplies at the last second -- thats gonna cost you big. 7. For goodness sake, dont forget your charging cable for your phones. Dont forget batteries, and most of all, dont forget your BADGE. I dont care how sure you are, dig out your badge, look at it, and put it back into your primary bag before you leave the house. 8. Let me let you in on a secret: theres a ton of downtown parking garages. And they all look pretty much the same. Especially at night. Ill never forget GenCon 2010 because I spent FOUR hours walking around downtown Indianapolis in the wee hours, looking for the parking garage with my car. It gave me a ton of blisters and a decidedly sour first night. Take your ticket with you when you leave the garage. Dont just leave it on the dash. Make a quick mnemonic about the intersection nearby.... (like Captiol and New York. Youre going to New York and CAP IT ALL with a trip to the Statue of Liberty). 9. Bring Vitamin C caplets. Theyll give you a quick boost and theyre portable and cheap. 10. Most of all, come to peace with the fact SOME things are going to go wrong. You cant prepare for every contingency. Just go and have the best time you can, and hopefully the bumps wont be too bad.
