Well, if it ain’t bad weather, it’s Congress. The budget fight has all national parks and stuff shutting down today. I had a great night of sleep and even slept in! Watched the sunrise from my sleeping bag and then dozed for a couple hours more! Packed up and headed to Arco, ID for breakfast at Pickle’s Place. Great breakfast, endless coffee and the morning paper. I would highly recommend it if you happen to be passing through Arco! Since Craters of the Moon was shutting down, as well as all the other targets for the day, I was into re-planning. I wandered southeast through the Idaho National Laboratory and tried the EBR-1 reactor site museum, but it had closed last month. I was surprised to find that this desert is filled with all different types of nuclear reactors as well as all of the other stuff that makes nuclear energy work. The Navy trained their Nukes out here in the desert before sending them out to their nuke-powered ships. I got to see some parts of the Oregon Trail as I wandered on, headed for the City of the Rocks National Reserve. I knew that would be closed, but there is Idaho’s Crystal Rock state park right next door. I’m camped at the state park campground, which is quite luxurious…it has flushing toilets and real showers! Grilled up some burgers and settled in for a quiet night since I also have cell phone coverage here. If you see this tonight, I might have been able to break the code on Facebook updates via the mobile hotspot! Tomorrow I’m going to try to hike in to the City of Rocks and failing that, will explore the state park. I may stay another night where I am to see whether the weather and Congress clear up. If the weather stays bad, or if Congress can’t figure out how to keep the National Parks open, I may be in for an early return home. Aloha from Idaho!
