Well it happened, 10 minutes before departing Detroit for Kalamazoo, they cancelled the flight. I managed to secure one of the last available rental cars from Hertz, and asked an uniformed officer if he wanted a ride to Kalamazoo. Within a few minutes, I had assembled a random and diverse crew of passengers. 1) Len, a Navy Captain trying to get home to his family after serving 1 year in Afghanistan - last tour of duty 2) A young MIT Professor from Uganda with a PhD from Cambridge University ready to see his 1 and 3 year olds after being gone for a while (and spoke Swahili!). 3) A Delta pilot - Mo she was very entertaining to say the least from Kalamazoo (K Central /Western Grad) and soon to be promoted to Captain. And 4) a French Exchange Student, desperate to get back to her American family (yes, we spoke to her family before she joined us) An entertaining and white knuckled drive back to the Zoo. It was my privilege and honor to help a man in uniform get back to his family tonight. Thank you Len for your service!
