Well, it was a grand weekend for sure! I knew it would be when I saw our bowls go in the suitcase. After a really long ride we got to one of our favorite hotels – the beds are low so Rye and I love to jump on and off and play monkeys in the bed. And then, in the morning…..BIRDS!!! We dropped Rye and my dad at a field for their test and went up the hill for my test. My live bird went down really close to the gunner’s blind but I didn’t care…NOTHING was keeping me from that bird. And I remembered where the first bird fell and picked it right up. Then I did my blind. Down a hill, up a hill, through tall grass. My mom only had to blow the whistle once and I got it!! Next was my upland hunt – what fun!! The judges said they let me hunt a really long time because it looked like I was having so much fun and I was – back and forth through the tall grass, bushes and the mud, smelling lots and lots of birds – but listening and following directions like I was supposed to. And then my favorite part – the trail. I love using my nose in the woods to find the bird. So many good smells, but they couldn’t fool me. When I got to the pile there were three birds there and it took me a minute to decide which one I wanted. When I picked the best one I ran right up the hill with it to my mom. After lunch we went to water. That is absolutely my most favorite part of all. One bird went in the water off a little point of land and the wind blew it behind the land but I found it after I checked to make sure the log wasn’t the bird. The second bird went in the water really close to land and behind some tall things. I got a little confused and ran on the land but then I got in the water and swam around. I figured out where it was and tried to get through the tall grass but it was too thick so I swam around a little more and found a better way to get it. Then we did the water blind. It was a little tricky because I had to run across the land and go through the tall grass to get in the water. There was a little opening in the grass that would have made it easy to get into the water but my mom wanted me to go through the grass, so I did – really fast, and I jumped right in the water. My mom only had to blow one whistle and I got to the bird on the other side. When I got back to her, everyone clapped their hands! After the judges and my mom told me what a great job I did and we walked off the line, I told them how happy I was by doing my happy dance for everyone!! It was a grand day!!!!! I got a ribbon and a new title but really, I would have liked another bird!!
