Well, its over. Yeah! Ive been wondering how to respond on this climactic day after three months of intense campaigning and decided to write just one speech win or lose. First to my incredible family. What can I say? You are my family. Trish, every day you told me, “Youre going to win”. My son, Harrison, you always had a positive comment or consoling remark after every attack ad, “You? A liberal? And you would laugh. Finally, to my daughter, Sarah. Without a nudge from your Mom or I, you took the initiative and registered to vote then did it. You did this all on your own. You will never know how much that means to me Sarah. I love my family. Next to my new friends, my campaign team and supporters, “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers”. If a person is ever going to do anything worthwhile, there will be times when he must risk everything by his leap into the dark. Its the American way and you ARE true Americans. You lept with me and we have landed safely, better for it. All of you with me took that leap in February and today, here we stand now with an exceptional bond that only people who have fought the good fight know. “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers”. We should never forget this day or this time...nor should we, win or lose, because we persevered and finished well. Next, to the thousands who out there in this district stood with us, endorsing our message with your vote. Thank you. You are why we all worked so hard. Finally, to those who wanted to stand with us but backed away out of fear I can only leave you with a statement by the greatest American President, Ronald Reagan: “If some among you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping hell eat you last.” Remember that. Overcome your fear. In conclusion, I leave you with a quote from Eric Liddell, the Christian missionary, Olympic Champion and to me, a man who exemplified what it meant to put your faith on the line in the conduct of daily life and your witness to others. He said: “In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is a glory to be found if one has done his best.” We all, family, team, and voters did our best, win or lose. Lets enjoy this evening. Give each other a hug, and carry on. Thank you for this opportunity you have have provided me to serve you simply by the act of running for you as a candidate for office as your representative in Montgomery. Thank you.
