Well less than a week now till the big day. 50! I have spent the last year moaning and complaining about this approaching birthday. When I was in my twenties I thought that was old. However, for the most part, I feel pretty good. Most days I feel like I did in my twenties and certainly have learned a lot along the way. Sure there are the obvious changes that come with aging....my eyesight basically stinks (take really bad near sightedness and throw in the inability to read a label and you get blind as a bat), things have moved South (maybe that is why the elderly are drawn to Florida), some mornings I sound like bubble wrap popping when I get out of bed and Im not even going to mention hot flashes. Considering this body has given life to and nourished 4 children (hey, I even doubled up once), carried two toddlers, pocketbook and diaper bag while rushing between football, baseball, basketball, wrestling and gymnastic practices, picked more beans than I care to count, read thousands of books with children wriggling on my lap, chased various dogs through several neighborhoods, learned more new computer programs at work than I care to count, nursed my parents through numerous surgeries, unloaded, loaded and folded more loads of laundry than small countries produce, painted walls and furniture and danced to and sang millions of songs in the car and through the house (since I do neither of those things well, but do them with gusto, my kids say they could have lived without it). While I may not be packing for the cruise of the Greek Isles I always thought I would be going on at this age, I have been able to put two children through college, help one move into his new home he purchased himself, plan a beautiful wedding, watch my daughter walk down the aisle and help her pack and move a long way from home and still drive two teenage boys from one activity to another AND keep them fed. If the next fifty years are like the past fifty, sign me up. If not, its been a pretty sweet ride and Im headed to fabulous new home where all my friends and family are waiting....He told me so.
