Well my birthday is winding down, and it has been low-key, but truly wonderful just hearing from everyone and realizing that so many of you took time out from your very busy days/lives to reach out and wish me well. People always complain that Facebook isnt the real world and that Facebook friendships are just an illusion. But, that has not been my experience. In my darkest hours, loneliest moments, any time of the day or night...even when my folks in the real world were busy, tired, preoccupied or otherwise unavailable, there has always someone here willing to listen to me whine, complain, vent. Willing to respond, advise and most of all encourage. Sure theres a lot of negativity and narcissism here online...but I find theres also a lot of hope and goodwill. Maybe its easier, sometimes, from a distance and/or behind a cloak of anonymity...but, 24/7 folks share words of wisdom, news. invitations, cartoons, warnings, jokes, updates, music, anecdotes, photos, opportunities, poetry, advice, opinions...they publicize each others events -- all of this for no other reason than to help folks they have never and may never meet. They also share their hopes and dreams. Sometimes even their failures, disappointments and heartbreak. To me, thats pretty special. Like so many things in life, maybe it is true that you get out of it, what you put into it. I cant help feeling that exchange is lopsided in my favor, because I receive so much from interacting with all of you. Its been the case for me, that Facebook friends are no more or less real than any other relationships. While cyberspace is obviously no substitute for the real world, it certainly has a value of its own...and thats because of all of you. I thank you!
