Well, my local Tawny Frogmouth chicks are growing up fast and now resemble their parents in both size and plumage. In fact this may be one of the last opportunities I have to photograph them before they leave to establish territories and lives of their own. Once they have fledged, Tawny Frogmouth chicks stay with their parents for another month or two, perfecting their flying and hunting techniques along with learning the skills they will need to survive. The chicks are now out and flying with their parents and learning to hunt, however their parents are still feeding them. These no so little ones call constantly with soft, wheezing-like rasps until food items, like big juicy moths are brought to them. Soon though, their parents will stop feeding them and they will be forced to become independent and disperse. Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal birds who share many similarities with owls, however, they are not owls they are part of the nightjar family. They do not capture prey with their feet as raptors do but use their large and powerful beaks. Nocturnal insects make up the bulk of their diet. Tawny Frogmouths are found throughout Australia.
