Well one notes with interest the front cover of the Times today who once again is proclaiming its disgust at the nasty pop stars and celebs who have been involved in a dodgy tax dodge. It doesnt stop there in fact, doctors are also in the firing line and they will have a go at lawyers and judges and various other professionals, dentists perhaps, and vets and builders and painters and gardeners and postman and shop owners. And what about salon owners and hairdressers, theyre def on the tax make. Theyll have a go at anyone. For all their accusations one target they wont aim at will be big business who opt out of paying huge amounts of tax by mutual agreement with the tax office. Nevermind that this amounts to the equivalent of double education budget, its much better to go after George Micheal and/or the local GP because that way they can get everyone going after everyone, the main raison detre of the Times and the right wing press. They would have you believe that the recession was in fact down to the tax avoidance of your neighbour. Forget the banks, it was down to Mr Jones over the road or if youre the Mail it was down to Mr Nazir and more recently Mr Bartkowski. They in fact triggered the global financial meltdown and increase in cost of living. So in spite of the Times headlines lets not fall into their trap of hating our neighbours and thinking that they are responsible for economic woes. That is not to say that aggressive tax avoidance is to be forgiven however it is a drop in the ocean compared to commercial tax avoidance, but talking about that doesnt help in the maintenance of the great divides in society that ensure the preservation of corrupt power.
