Well said David Cook :) "What happened to your hand? Ha! A question which has been asked to me many times over the years! Still is by those who have enough curiosity and sometimes courage to ask. I could be at work serving a customer at work, at the supermarket doing my shopping, even out with family and friends! It could be anywhere and I’m not bothered by it. My simple explanation is that I was born this way so I’ve had it from day one. I don’t know what happened and I don’t really care. This is me and the way I am so why change it? When telling children I explain it like being a tree. When a tree is growing it needs vitamins and minerals to get bigger and grow branches and leaves. But for some reason all of the vitamins and minerals never made to my hand to make my fingers grow. When a child or anyone asks me the question it means that they are curious as to the reason and I am only too happy to tell them. I’d rather they get the truth from me than wondering or guessing about it. Think about it! If you had a child with you and they asked you ‘What happened to that person’s hand?’ What would you tell them as you probably would guess and wouldn’t know? For me growing up was no different. Sure there was times when I had to think of a different way to do things but that never stopped me. Having a deformity is classified as a disability but I don’t think so. My hand is not a disability to me and never will be. I never had any fingers and didn’t know any differently. I have played all types of sports both individual and team sports playing for local clubs and involved with sport at school where I eventually was the sports captain. Having a hand difference has made me more a positive and determined person and it is all a learning process for the parent and their child which will make their bond stronger. I believe I am a better person for it. There are many more people with far greater challenges than me and they just get on with it. It’s their Choice! There are many experiences that I have had and still have, that I could tell you about. As well as thoughts and opinions that I could share but I don’t want to go on and on as I would never stop! lol "
