Well said. Many times when I tutor kids in math, they have trouble executing a procedure bc they have no concept of what it means or why you do it. They are just following steps. New teaching styles arent about getting an answer so much as understanding the problem. If you think thats counterproductive, youre wrong. Lets face it, most people dont use a lot of math in their everyday lives. Ive always said that math doesnt teach you numbers as much as it teaches you abstract understanding and problem solving in every aspect of your life. So by expanding your mind to more easily grasp concepts and understanding, you can more easily respond to situations in your life. Math is beautiful and my motto has always been: When you learn more about history, you understand more about history. When you learn more about biology, you understand more about biology. But when you learn more about math, you understand more about EVERYTHING!
