Well said Zahra Hankir In an overly obvious attempt to walk on eggshells, the NYT calls 16-year-old Muhammad Abu Khdeir the possible victim of an attack that may have been a retaliation. At the top of its mainbar story, it gives Israels Minister of Internal Security an entire paragraph in which he urges residents to lower the volume regarding suspicion the murder was an act of revenge. And yet Israeli authorities almost immediately placed blame on Hamas for the brutal killings of Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Fraenkel and Gilad Shaer, the three teenagers, even though there was no direct evidence to support this. Is the notion of apparent revenge killing limited to attacks possibly made by Israelis on Palestinians? In previous coverage, the NYT (among countless other outlets) devoted ample space to the lives of the teenagers, and yet we know nothing of this young boy, besides the fact that he was abducted in the early hours of the morning, while he waited in front of a mosque to perform prayers with his friends, during Ramadan. And that his body was so badly burned it could only be identified with DNA tests. Apparently, there is no such thing as retaliation to systematic oppression, the rapid expansion of settlements -- deemed illegal under international law -- and the continuous, unchecked violation of human rights. Not even possible retaliation.
