Well, season premiere of Grimm was disappointing--the whole Nick goes to Europe plotline was short-circuited by the villains being incompetent and the heroes getting lucky. Saving grace was Adalinde in Europe being snarky about the the bloodiness and grubbiness of Hexenbiest ritual magic. But this was a masterpiece compared to Dracula afterward. Dracula seemed an exercise in WTF theatre as they shoehorned in every popular trope they could. Order of villainous industrialists and cultists? Check. A female Slayer straight out of Buffy, training montage and all? Check. Tesla-style electrical experiments? Check. Feminist women empowered to smash the glass ceiling despite not a single man being willing to so much as sniff or arch an eyebrow in their direction? Check. A similar absence of racism or even classism as Dracula, playing an American industrialist with a bad Southern accent, has a huge black Renfield (doing a much better, but non-Southern, accent) and no one sniffs, sneers, or even remarks on such a remarkable major domo? Check. Couples slobbering on each other in public at a high society ball like American high school students behind the bleachers? Check. Women of good breeding walking around in public unchaperoned? Check. Add in weird and clumsy quotes of the best lines from the original Dracula and youve got an odd mess. I will admit, however, that Im intrigued by the upcoming episode Goblin Merchant Men and will at least watch till that, being a Christina Rossetti fan.
