Well that was surprising. You know it was a good day at the office when you break your 5km PB and your last km is your quickest. Had my second race in Melbourne yesterday, Race 3 of the Start to Finish Event Management ActiveTRI Team Up Series, which also happened to be the State Victorian Sprint Championship. With last week being the start of prac for my degree, I was definitely trying to cope with all the changes, and how to get around in Melbourne on ye olde push bike. So I was hesitant and anxious about how this race would go. Also had a great week with the coach and his wife Anna, and their boys. What a way to have a chilled out lead into the race. Boys helping me with my mag session and open water session. Warmed up well feeling pretty good, but from a mentality side of things didnt really want to accept it. But followed my warm up plan to the second. Was good seeing Polly from Physiohealth just before the race, as she was competing in her first triathlon on the same day. Although it was not as action packed as previous weekend, there was still a lot of quality athletes that managed to get that little voice in my head. Melbourne once again had turned on the wind, and the Elwood beach was definitely anything but calm. I knew it was going to be a tough swim. The sound of the horn and we were off. Battling the constant barrage of waves. As soon as you crested one it would be swept from underneath you so you smack back into the ocean below. It was a hectic mess, all I can say is that Im glad I went to the toilet pre race otherwise it wouldnt of been pretty. Managed to get out of the water in about 12th or 13th place, with a slow transition I was out onto the bike. Couldnt quite get the guy that was just in front of me, but I battled for 7kms until I was caught by another young upcomer. Working well together we managed to draw in the other 3, so there was 5. We headed into transition all together, so I knew it was go time. Busting out of T2, I knew I had some redemtation and some devils on my shoulder. Within the first 200m I had broken away from the guys that came off the bike with me. Boy I was feeling good, getting place after place, and managing to grab 3rd place in the last 200m. This lead me for my first podium of this season, with a bronze medal. I had also the quickest run split of the day by over 20secs, as mentioned breaking my 5km PB with a 15:39. Still a lot of lessons learnt, and things to work on. But it is one step in the right direction. Thanks to organisers and volunteers for making it a great day out. Also thanks to Physiohealth for the entry and all the Elite Triathlon Performance Australia crew that supported me. Also to the boys up front, awesome racing fellas. Peace, now for my next race in 7 days. Bunbury Triathlon Club Team Gravity Zero
