Well, the Association of Writers & Writing Programs deities are smiling down today. Not only did we successfully petition to create a caucus for K-12 teachers of creative writing, but a panel that I conceived with the help of colleagues at some of the other arts high schools in the country was also accepted: Opting out of the Pyramid Scheme: In Praise of Teaching High School. Big thanks to Scott Gould of the South Carolina Governors School for the Arts, my Interlochen colleague Anne-Marie Oomen, Kim Henderson of Idyllwild, Margaret Funkhouser of Walnut Hill, and Monika Cassel of the New Mexico School for the Arts for their help. Ill also be moderating a panel that should prove to be provocative, Literary Citizenship: Incessant Self-Promo or Virtuous Duty?, featuring Richard Nash, CLMPs Julie Buntin, Austin Kleon, and Cathy Day, one of the big forces behind discussions of literary citizenship in the world of MFA programs. Im looking forward to working with such great people.
