Well the Tigers accomplished the 1st of their team goals tonight when they beat the Twins 1-0 in Minnesota. With the victory the Tigers wrapped up their 3rd straight Central Division title. The story tonight was Max Scherzer. Max went 7 innings and allowed only 2 hits. Both of the hits could be classified as infield singles. The first was a slow roller between pitcher’s mound and 3rd base. The other was ground ball to the right of Infante. Infante was able to get his glove on the ball but then it rolled out into the outfield. Max’s only other weakness tonight was control. He walked a season high 6. That and the fact that he struck out 10 led to a high pitch count and his exit after 7 innings. The only offense in this game occurred in the first 2 Tiger hitters. Austin Jackson led off with a triple and then came home on a single up the middle by Torii Hunter. That was it. The rest was left up to Scherzer and then the bullpen. The Tigers turned to Jose Veras in the 8th. He retired the first batter he faced and then gave up, you guessed it, an infield single. Leyland then brought in Drew Smyly who then retired the next 2 Twins to end the 8. In the 9th Leyland went to his closer, Joaquin Beniot. He set the Twins down in order, the first on a fly out to Jackson and then 2 strikeouts. With the strikeout of Willingham, the last Twin hitter the race for Central Division title was over, with the Tigers claiming top prize. The only thing remaining is the actual seeding which is pretty much either 2nd or 3rd. However the Tigers will need to rest some players which will take precedent. However at least for a week Tiger fans can relax and look forward to the post season. In the clubhouse the chant of the players was “Our job is not done, but let’s enjoy the night”. Tiger fans and players will indeed do that. It has been a long season with ups and downs but at least for the regular season it has ended where we wanted it to.
