Well, the result is in and Everett, somehow, gets the license to open and operate a casino. Its not going to change my life, one way or another but it is going to change the lives of thousands of people who depend on horse racing to eke out a living. The Suffolk/Mohegan package would have saved this 79 year old industry and made racing that much better for folks to enjoy. The Commission in their apparent near sightedness seems to have failed to take into account the fact that their vote for Everett essentially dooms and entire industry and its employees to oblivion. How in good conscience they could award the license to Everett which has serious issues with land ownership, very serious issues with sight pollution and even more serious issues with what will be a traffic nightmare of major proportions no matter what they try and do to alleviate the problem. Revere had no such problems. Revere had good access roads, public transportation and clean land on which to build and the land was owned by solid, upstanding citizens and not subject to investigations etc about who owns what. My deepest sympathies go out to the men and women of Suffolk Downs who will lose their jobs because of this and to the breeders and farm owners who were counting on a more agreeable solution. I have a bad feeling that politics played a heavy role in the final decision. Why should we be surprised? After all, it is Massachusetts where the absurd is often the norm.
