Well the summer line up officially started last week and after my trip to anime expo my first one on the list was Sword Art Online II, despite its first season for being absolutely atrocious for pacing, story writing, and character development, the biggest problem it had was its lack of direction and what it wanted to be as a show. This is the part where I stop bashing SAO and get to the real review also if you havent watched then dont read. Anyways, despite how this writer has very bad depth of writing skills overall, he really knows how to start a story up, in this season and last season the first episode clearly sums up the world in which his characters will play their respective parts. But thats not what really caught my attention, this first episode while despite not having any action had a lot of time for character development in the shape of asuna and kiritos conversation. Kiritos future aspiration for the next technological breakthrough in society is a reminder of the .hack franchise whos overall theme was the advancement of human technology at an astronomical rate and the potential effects on it on our growing society. I must say for being a generic action/adventure genre anime, this was the first time the writer has had an aspiration or theme to represent his show has a whole and maybe even possibly have a more deeper meaning overall? For the train wreck of season 1, Season 2 has all the chances to wipe out its past failures and rebuild itself as a series from the bottom up even potentially making season 1 more charming than it was. After only looking at one episode of the series that question will take awhile to answer but perhaps maybe the show itself while clearly define itself in this arc and yes for the first episode I will say that it was well done and potentially one of the best of this seasons line up. My only hope is that the writer himself has the capacity to keep his story consistent and well paced. (For the love of god please) Overall Rating: 8/10
