Well, theres another one for you - and particularly for those who might be outside our geographic area. A lightning-caused fire began in the area of Little Yosemite Valley last month - a side branch of the main Yosemite Valley basically between famed Half Dome and Glacier Point - the upper reaches of Merced River flow through this area, most prominently as Vernal and Nevada Falls. The NPS has been monitoring the fire and its referred to as the Meadows Fire (not to be confused with the BIG Meadow fire of 2009!) The actual location is northeast of Mount Starr King, below Starr King Meadow. Well, for some reason (Im guessing wind, as its been windy here off and on all weekend) the fire apparently really blew up and is now producing a huge amount of smoke. On Thursday it was reported at 19 acres in size, but its now got to be considerably bigger than that. Though were about 18 or so miles from this one as the crow flies, the smoke is now very visible from our house, which is amazing as were located deep in a climax-growth forest. I just went to a vantage point not far from the house, well out of our trees and snapped a couple shots. Remember as you see my two photos: this is a good 18 miles away from our house, in the area behind Half Dome, but gives an idea of the size of the smoke plume, and therefore: the productivity of this fire - and heres a link to Yosemite Conservancys High Sierra live cam from Sentinel Dome. Earlier, the ground fire activity was just barely visible on the far right but has moved considerably into view now: yosemiteconservancy.org/webcams/high-sierra#.VAzl8_ldWul
