Well, this certainly is unprecedented under our present Constitution. It appears that the oral arguments on Malacanang’s Motion for Reconsideration in the DAP case have begun even without the Supreme Court calling for one. How can it? Are not the petitioners yet to comment on this final hurrah of the Palace? Two things – is it proper for the legal and factual arguments raised in said Motion to be now publicly discussed, or argued, by no less than the President himself considering, as he himself concedes, the continued pendency of the matter before the Supreme Court? How can he face the nation and say that he will abide by the final ruling of the Supreme Court on the matter when, even before it does or is given the chance to make its final decision, he has already started, well, “conditioning” the minds of the people into believing or accepting his basic posture that the Supreme Court is equally guilty of precisely one of the violations of the Constitution imputed to him? Of course, I am not at all surprised that it is the President himself who now uses every forum, other than the halls of our Supreme Court, for his discussion of his grounds for his Motion for Reconsideration. This, I believe, is totally in his character. I seriously doubt that he does this with the concurrence, or upon the advice, of his counsel. He probably has never heard of the saying that only a fool would have himself as his own lawyer. What is most disconcerting about what the President is doing is that he has now taken his contest to the streets and has started a “street brawl,” if you will, between the Palace and Padre Faura. I seriously doubt that the Supreme Court would oblige him and descend to this low level. I have faith that it would not, and instead maintain the requisite dignity in its proceedings. Mr. President, what you are doing may be expected of street blackguards, brats, bullies or brawlers. It is not what is expected of a President of our Republic, who should be looked up to by the nation as a leader who works with his co-equals with courtesy, and not contumacy or contempt. I am not now saying that the President is wrong in his arguments. This is for the Supreme Court to finally determine. Its original 13-0 vote however certainly stands as a clear enough indication as to the merits of the President’s position. What I am saying is that there are rules that he needs to acknowledge and follow in his desperate quest to prove himself right. And so the disrespect founded on stubbornness clearly persists. How I wish someone really close to him, a person he listens to (if there is such an individual), would have the courage to rise and tell him to please “grow up” or kindly “shut up” and just allow our Supreme Court to decide. But then, this may also be viewed as disrespectful. He is, after all, still our President. Oh well…to all, a good night! God save our Republic!
