Well, today was a real estate first and I hope last for me, - TopicsExpress

Well, today was a real estate first and I hope last for me, Christina Macro, Wayne Curtis, Paddee Leischner and all. I showed a house (1.2 million) in one of the best neighborhoods in N. Arlington and even that was modestly priced for the area. But apparently while I WAS THERE the house was being burgled! The agent had said the owners had a sweet dog (yellow lab). I had arrived earlier than my client and thought about going in and turning on all of the lights as I usually do, and making sure that the dog was ok. But, because I am still trying to learn how to use the Blackberry 10, I sat in my car and waited while playing with the phone. We went through the main level thoroughly then headed upstairs. When we walked into the master bedroom with sweet dog in tow, I noticed underwear strewn about the floor. My first thought was that the dog had gotten into a drawer and pulled some out. But as I looked around, there were drawers open in the dresser, the highboy, and night stands. Two jewelry boxes were also open and the contents emptied onto the tops of the dressers. At that point I suspected something bad and started taking pictures to document the state that it was in when we arrived. I left a message for the listing agent to call me ASAP. We then went to the basement rec room. Because the rest was not finished and there was no egress (gulp) my client just peeked into one room then decided it would not work for them. Back on the main level we just had to go out to the gorgeous, very private, fenced in yard (non-guard dog in tow). We played a few tosses of the ball with him then headed back inside. It was at that time that we saw an open window in the mud room and a screen had been removed. Fearful, but knowing that I had to secure the house, we went back inside and I tried closing and locking the window but it had been pried open and was broken. So we grabbed our purses and went out the front door as fast as possible. I sent the pictures to the agent from my car after trying 2 more phone numbers. About 10 minutes away he called and I told him that I had noticed a young woman with a large pink tote who had been standing on the curb (texting) as I was leaving so I offered to go back to see if she was still there. She was gone but by that time the wife had come home and the police were on their way. So I gave them a statement, sat with the owner and told her what I had seen and waited until the police said it was ok for her to go in as they had completed the search and dusted for prints. She was most grateful and I could feel her sense of fear and violation. I felt bad and lucky at the same time. Wow, what a day.
