Well wer have time to tell you a couple of Haloween stories before the actual date so lets ge at it. Halloween had always been celebrated with gusto in Sugar Hill. My Dad used to tell a story about a group of boys who took upon themselves the task of tipping over outhouses.. There were rival factions in town that were out to see which could overturn the most outhouses belonging o the other facction A favorite target was Herb Smith and that particular war culminatd in Herbs outhouse being overturned on this particular Holloween eve when Herbs siste,r Mable Pasealt was occupied inside thw structure. Mables screams on that occasion resulted in the banning of thqt sport forever. In my day we substituted removal of property for tipping of othouses. This usually consisted of signs and usually did ot involve much of any value other than the nusence of putting it back where i belonged. This one time however, Roland Hubbard came p with an extravigant plan. We had a larger gang than usual and therefore could take on a larger project. There was Roland Hubbard, his brother Ellesworth, Homer Straw and his brother Bob, Tom Aldrich and his Broher Richard and me, Roger Aldrich. We went to Herbert Smiths barn, rolled out his hay wagon which was still attached and as qietly as we could rolled it to the schoolhouse. We disconnected the front wheels and boosted the rear wheels up onto the veranda, then boosted the front wheels up and connceted them to the rear wheels. Thr toungue which connected the two parts had holes at different lengtths so the body could be stretched to different lengths and we stretched it out so hqt the front wheels weree aginst he right railings ad th back wheels were against the left raiilig.. The tounge of the wagon stuck out beneath the right railing of th veranda. We then boosted the hay wagon body in place and the two doors were completely blocke.d. Which was the way the teachers found it when the came to open the school in th morning.. As the students began to gather they called Ned Jesseman, the custodian but Ned soon found the task to be beyond has ability to fix and resorted to his usual answer to an insolvable problem which was to throw his hat on the ground and swear mighty oaths while jumping up and down on the hat. Finally enough men were assembled so that they could take the wagon apatr and remove it from the verada thus allowing the doors to be opened and school to begin, even though it was two hours late. There was talk of prosecution should he culprits ever be found. But they never were.
