Well what an eventful night we had tonight!! Jan went out on the streets tonight with another volunteer at the church and saw things neither one of us had ever seen or experienced before. She met a young rough sleeper who had a broken leg. She asked him how he got it to be told some boys on a night out decided it would be funny to stamp on it whilst he was sleeping in a doorway. When he was asked if he gets a lot of trouble like that he told Jan he usually just gets verbal abuse or peed on. It always amazes me how cruel some people can be, as if being forced to live on the streets wasnt enough! As ever i was in the clothes room sorting, labelling and giving out your donated clothing and footwear. I found it very challenging at the church tonight, there were quite a few volatile people kicking off because they wanted more items than were allowed to give, purely in being fair to everyone. I stick to the rules of not treating anyone differently and not bending the rules or showing any type of favouritism as this causes anger and sometimes can cause physical fights amongst them but it was VERY difficult for me tonight. It was nice to see some familiar faces from our Soup run though and Ive learnt a few more names again tonight. I really do enjoy being able to chat with them and using their name. Its amazing how much it really does break down some of the barriers between us. We REALLY need more clothing donations though friends so please, please, please can you look through your wardrobe and draws and give us what you no longer want. Any clothes donated but are not suitable for the homeless are taken to charity shops and swapped for what we need the most. There are a few drop off points around Cardiff (St Mellons, Ely, Fairwater and Roath or we can come and collect directly from you.
