Well where do I start today....................lets see, we have more examples as to why you should not allow your dogs or cats to roam free..... # 1- if I have occasion to contact you in reference to a complaint received from a neighbor that just does not agree with the rest of the neighbors that allow their dogs to roam the subdivision, then the result should be that the dogs are then properly contained. In this case one of the dogs is now deceased after ingesting both a petroleum based product and other yet unidentified toxins. If you have a shed on your property, garage etc...and it is on your property, you have an expectation of privacy, meaning you probably do not expect anything or anybody to venture inside if it is open. I cannot say that is the case in this situation, but these are examples as to how easy it is for a family pet to gain access to things it should not consume. If I put down fertilizer, a pesticide for rodents etc...these too are examples of the issues when pets roam free. A lot can happen in a short period of time. # 2- if you are warned about your dogs roaming onto a nearby farm and running the cows and calves, the correct response would be to again, properly contain your dogs- not, : we told him if they shot them, we understand . The end result to this scenario is either going to be properly contained dogs, or someone ( the dogs owners) being charged with animal cruelty if the dogs meet their demise due to their neglect and incorrect decision making process. We will keep you posted if it comes to that. As a pet owner and or a farmer / rancher, you do have the right to protect your pets and / or livestock. I AM NOT PROMOTING THE HARM OF ANY ANIMAL- I am bringing up the fact that individuals can protect their pets, family, livestock and this is an example of how these type of situations occur. I would much rather trap, or have you capture and call us after containing any nuisance dog or cat and under certain circumstances try to find them a better home than have to deal with injured or deceased animals due to these situations . I am bringing this up again as once again we are currently dealing with similar issues of this nature. We have been receiving many calls regarding a dog in the parking lot at Walmart that looks in poor health but everytime I get there it is gone. We will check periodically for the dog but we cannot place a trap there since it would probably disappear and we do not want to leave a trapped dog in the direct sunlight either. Spaying and neutering your pets can eliminate a lot of these problems too.......all of our animals, cats and dogs, are fixed. They are all rescues, all very active and all playful and healthy. And during certain times of the year, my fence line is not littered with potential boyfriends for my female dogs. Check the internet if you are the least bit curious as to the distance an intact male will cover to locate a female in heat- you will be surprised. Gotta go, calls holding- Mike Union Co Sheriffs Animal Control 706-439-6052.
