Wellbeing Foundation Africa Creates Awareness of Childhood Pneumonia on World Pneumonia Day 2013 In commemoration of World Pneumonia Day celebrated annually on the 12th of November, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa—a leading pan-African maternal, newborn and child health empowerment organization, joins the global community in advocating against childhood pneumonia, the number one killer of children under the age of five. On World Pneumonia Day, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s 24-7-365 Advocacy and Action social media campaign is escalating advocacy efforts to comprehensively create awareness of pneumonia, its prevention and treatment. By pushing against childhood pneumonia, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa remains committed to the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 4—the reduction of the under-five mortality rate by two thirds between 1990 and 2015. Established in 2009 by the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia, the three-fold mandate of World Pneumonia Day is to raise awareness of pneumonia; promote protective, preventive and treatment interventions; and generate action to combat this life-threatening illness which accounts for 18% of child deaths. To achieve these goals, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa has strategically partnered with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), to amplify the dissemination of a spectrum of pneumonia-focused health information. With pneumonia and diarrhea being the two leading killers of children under five, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, on the 15th of October 2012, made a commitment to eliminate both diarrheal and pneumonia childhood deaths in support of the Nigerian Government’s ‘Saving One Million Lives’ campaign. “Given our recognition of the essential need for accurate and timely information and statistics to guide on-going strategic and tactical decisions, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa will make available Personal Health Record Health Checklists that will provide data on incidents and management of diarrhea and pneumonia,” Founder-President, H.E Mrs. Toyin Saraki, stated. “…As behavioural change has to be realised to benefit from the availability of ORS Zinc for diarrhea and the use of antibiotics for pneumonia, the Wellbeing Foundation will [also] provide a health promotional platform on diarrhea and pneumonia as part of the WBFA 24-7-365 advocacy campaign. This two-fold commitment which encompasses the efficacy of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa IMNCH Personal Health Record (PHR)©, a revolutionary life-saving tool, and the global-reaching WBFA 24-7-365 Advocacy and Action social media campaign, will be a key force in supporting the attainment of MDG 4, given its ability to target both the grassroots and international audience, and its capacity to capture the effective management and treatment of childhood pneumonia and diarrhea. Supporters of the United Nations Every Woman Every Child effort, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa continues to advocate for the reduction of maternal and child mortality, the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, and urges policy makers to make the prevention of child deaths from pneumonia, diarrhea and other diseases, a priority.
