Were a city blessed with many strengths, but we have a long ways to go to make Madison the best livable city. See Dane Countys 2012s homelessness report or the Annie E. Casey disparity report .. Alder Chris Schmidt had an excellent summary on how we should treat Livabilitys ranking of Madison: Madison is a great place to live. For middle and upper class whites such as myself. Ive skimmed through the methodology and it seems to me that our disparity is, ironically, what took us to the top. We got an 83 on housing, the highest score of any city except for Fargo, ND. This metric is a custom variable of theirs which looks at the range of housing options available, and it isnt clear if there is an adjustment for the student rental market or the vacancy rate being too low. We know we have a problem with housing affordability and availability. Our rating for Social and Civic Capital is in the middle of the pack. I think that one may have captured some of the disparity despite the description placing value on the level of commitment to engaging in government and public investment in the arts. Our demographics score is about where it should be, it is simply measuring age diversity and racial diversity. No metric is perfect, of course. And there are many great things about this city. But this reflects something weve seen as weve looked at data across from the Census bureau and elsewhere - aggregation and averaging can wash out the important details. And whether I noticed it because I am feeling cynical or for some other less interesting reason, the scores look like credit scores. Madison got 705.
