Were excited to bring you the first installment of In-Touch - TopicsExpress

Were excited to bring you the first installment of In-Touch Tuesday! Each Tuesday well share behind-the-scenes perspectives on various museum topics and experiences. Today we feature Dr. Jennifer Dickey, director of the public history program at Kennesaw State University. She responds to a panel in The Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of WWII, curated by students in the public history program in 2009. For every pilot in the air, there were about a dozen men and women on the ground who helped keep the pilots flying. The pilots always get the glory--the folks on the ground are often overlooked. In the case of the Tuskegee Airmen, everyone, including the pilots, was overlooked for many years because they were African American. They were, quite literally, left out of the history books. Telling the story of these unsung heroes was what really inspired my students when we began working on the Tuskegee Airmen traveling exhibit. Getting to meet some of the Airmen at the opening event was an unexpected bonus for the students. They really got to experience history face to face. You can visit The Tuskegee Airmen onsite at the MHHE.
