West Australian Red Flowering gum or eucalyptus ficifolia (left) and the New Zealand Christmas tree or pohutukawa (right) flower in cities all over the North Island of New Zealand and look very similar. The Red Flowering gum has a lighter more scarlet flower and the Pohutukawa has a darker redder flower. The photos were taken the same day in Wanganui and they often flower at the same time. There the similarities cease as they are completely different trees from different countries. The Pohutukawa is a vastly more common tree in NZ and is especially popular near coastal areas in both Australia and New Zealand.
