West Indian Medical Journal Print version ISSN 0043-3144 West Indian med. j. vol.59 no.3 Mona June 2010 Diabetes mellitus is listed among the leading causes of death in the Caribbean and a number of population based studies have documented the high prevalence of the disease. Despite the role of ageing in the morbidity and mortality from diabetes, data suggest that much of the morbidity and mortality from diabetes occurs in persons in the productive age groups, thus impacting on the overall productivity of the region. Diabetes mellitus is therefore one of the major public health challenges for the Caribbean in the twenty-first century.
