West Lothian Schools Pipe Band took part in their first competition of the 2014 season on Saturday at the British Championships, in Bathgate. The Novice Juvenile Grade had the largest entry of the day with 28 bands competing, meaning two qualifying heats of 14 bands had to be played in the morning, with the top six band from each heat then moving forward to play in the final in the afternoon. The band were drawn in the harder of the two heats alongside many of the leading bands in the grade. The youngsters performed exceptionally well in the heat and qualified for the final taking 1st place. With two 1st places from both piping judges a 2nd from the drumming judge and 1st from the ensemble judge, these score when added together meant the band won the heat by five points. The band again had a good, but more nervous performance, in the final taking fourth place out of the 12 bands that qualified. Results were as follows: Novice Juvenile Final:- 1st Preston Lodge High School 2nd George Watson’s Collage 3rd Dollar Academy 4th West Lothian Schools 5th Erskine Stewarts Melville Schools 6th George Heriot’s School It was a great start to the season for the youngsters, in their first competition of the year, with all the other bands in the top six having competed at two of the minor contests over the last three weeks. The band is now preparing for the its next Championship in Belfast on Saturday 14 June.
