West Virginia FILMmakers Festival Announces WV FILMmaker of the Year, Lawrence Cumbo; and Award Winners for the 15th Annual Festival SUTTON, W.Va. – The 15th Annual West Virginia FILMmakers Festival, was held in Sutton’s Elk Theatre, Oct. 3-5, West Virginia FILMmakers in attendance with their projects: Sonder, Jason Brown; The Flocking: Coal-aid Moviesode, Jacob Fertig; Border Patrol, Jason Litton; The Ultimatums Documentary, Ben Berry; WV Covered Bridges, Terry Lively/Vandalia Projects; Ted’s New Hobby, Rose Winland; and Coal Cocked, represented by Cindy Rank. The Festival winners: BEST STUDENT FILM, WV FILMmaker and Student Academy® Award Winner, Border Patrol, Justin Litton, Cinematographer (WV Filmmaker), Written and Directed by Peter Baumann. WV FILMmaker of the Year, Lawrence Cumbo currently owns the Shepherdstown Opera House, the first motion picture theater in WV with sound. Filmmaker, producer and cinematographer; these are a few of Lawrence Cumbo’s accomplishments. From “The Search for the Afghan Girl†and “American Transgender†to 2014’s series for the Smithsonian Channel “Rocking the Opera House: Dr. John,†Lawrence is a well-rounded filmmaker. His films have earned an Emmy nomination, multiple Cine Golden Eagles and an award from the New York Festivals in the World’s Best Movie& TV category. Along with his filmmaking skills, Lawrence has kept the historic Shepherdstown Opera House operating and vibrant with a mix of music, films and local events.
