West Virginia spends $48,663,409.72 on the 55 County Board of Education Offices ADMINISTRATIVE positions before a dollar reaches a door of a single school building. Its not just in WV Department of Education in Charleston! Redundancy across the state is killing our chances to obtain the best educational bang for our buck. $6,260,192.00 for 55 Superintendents $5,874,183.24 for 61 Assistant Superintendents $4,421,622.00 for 55 Treasurers $1,888,161.28 for 27 Nutritionists $15,555,186.81 for 198 Directors of Instruction $13,903,361.40 for 198 Directors of Support Services $760,703 for 7 RESA Directors And that is just the tip of the administrative iceberg. Those figures dont include their direct subordinates the country vehicles and other perks. If we can eliminate redundancy in education there would be so much more for the classroom and for directly teaching students. I am convinced the WV Department of Ed study lacked the intestinal fortitude and political will to address the top heavy system that exists in the state. If county BOEs are given more control without any spending over site, according to trends over the past 20 years, we would see more positions being created in offices with higher salaries and less funding for classrooms. The answer is to eliminate redundancy county by county by combining those services conducted in central board offices, then direct those savings where they are most effective, back to our classrooms and our students.
