Western Mass. residents react to recent civil rights protests SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)- Protests started across the nation after a New York grand jury decided not to indict a police officer who was caught on camera placing a black man in a chokehold that contributed to his death. “Rightfully so because there’s so much happening and it’s really really about time that there’s some change because really the whole world wants it and its about time for it to happen,” Kenneth King, of Wilbraham. A New York Grand Jury decision not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo for placing a chokehold on Eric Garner that a medical examiner says contributed to his death…has people chanting his last words that were caught on video ,”I can’t breathe.” Many western Massachusetts residents 22News spoke with today said they would like to see more done when it comes to recording statistics involving police shootings and minorities. But some community leaders say even the statistics that are recorded aren’t always the most accurate. Bishop Talbert Swan, of the Spring of Hope Church of God in Christ said, “What we do know about the numbers that have been reported are that African American males are 21 times more likely to be shot by police than there white counterparts.” Officer Pantaleo remains on desk duty while the NYPD looks into the case internally, and the Department of Justice looks at the case as well.
