Western medicine has always predominately looked at the mind and body as separate entities. I always found it strange that holistic approaches were considered alternative medicine compared to a strange little pills made from who knows what? Surely that is the alternative? The vagus nerve, know as the wanderer connects our brain to our body. This nerve is associated with the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls our relaxation responses. This nerve can become underdeveloped/deactivated if the bodys in a constant state of fight-or-flight due to the stress and anxiety that comes with living in todays society. An under developed nerve keeps the sympathetic nervous system in survival overdrive: your breathing becomes rapid and shallow, your heart rate increases and digestion becomes impaired. Anyone can reactivate their vagus nerve with various breathing techniques, meditation and through yoga. These daily lifestyle practices can signal your relaxation response, they engage the parasympathetic system and relieve stress in the area and contribute to your overall well being by aligning the body and mind. When your mind isnt at ease. There is a dis-ease.
