Western nations are assisting Islamic groups like the Al Nusra Front and the Libyan Islamist rebels whilst Islamist extremist with equivalent beliefs to these factions are simultaneously beheading soldiers, bombing trains, stabbing film makers to death and murdering cartoonists within Western nations. Many occasions when Western powers have helped Muslims generally and Islamists specifically, this includes Bosnia and Kosovo, but also the arming of the Mujaheddin against the Soviets, support for the Al Nusra Front and the vital military assistance given to the Islamist rebels in Libya. They chose a side in Libya and gave crucial and extensive support to that side and the side they chose and supported was the Islamists, not the socialist dictator. Its the same situation in Syria, Assad is a Westernized, liberal leader opposed to a large extent by violent, Islamist, zealots like the Al Nusra Front; the West chose to support the Islamists; without Western support there would be no Syrian opposition. Syria isnt being bombed for several reasons one of which is that Syria has much more effective anti-aircraft defence than Libya and is in close proximity to an allied state that is much more powerful than Libya and Iraq, meaning that too heavy handed an intervention could lead to a massive regional bloodbath, but mainly the lack of bombing was a result of a refusal to sanction such attacks from the British public. The British government wanted to bomb Syria but were presented from doing so by a political and popular rebellion, nevertheless, the Syrian opposition have been given massive financial and military assistance. They also created a new army and police force, its just that the religious/tribal fanaticism of this region constitute a more powerful a force than anything short of the brutality of a Saddam Hussein can contain.
