Mary: Resides in Sunnyside, children ages 10, 8, 6, 3 Her Comments: The SUNI Ed committee has laid out a compelling argument. We are a Sunnyside family who choiced into Valdez 7 years ago when it wasnt hard to secure a spot, and my younger kids have always had a spot due to sibling preference. Ive always felt lucky like that, but we shouldnt have to rely on school choice luck of the draw. Currently, Sunnyside has particularly thin options. Im grateful that we live within the Skinner boundary of Sunnyside, too. It makes no sense to me that most of Sunnyside has an ECE-8 school (Trevista) as our middle school. That, to me is unappealing because middle school should be a fresh start. (ie I wouldnt send my kids to a 6th grade where half of the kids already had established friendships, etc, while my kid were the newcomer). The proposal to return Horace Mann to its original purpose as a middle school makes much more sense. Give Sunnyside a stand alone middle school and reopen Smedley as a grade school! Valdez has been housed at Smedley this fall, and I absolutely love the building and its close proximity to my house. Our neighborhood deserves this building, operating as it was intended to do -- as an elementary school for the neighborhood, not a high school. We need your support to postpone the vote scheduled for next week. We could lose Smedley as a community elementary school where ALL neighborhood kids would be able to enroll at. Once again DPS has denied to engage our community and promised a high school to Smedley without our knowledge until 2 weeks ago.
