Weve had a few questions as to why a bulldog would need a tail amputation. Unlike most dogs, bulldog are born with naturally short or docked tails. Some them are born with what is called a corkscrew tail, where the tail circles in or out. For most bulldogs this isnt an issue with daily cleaning and maintenance. However, some have pockets that are so right that bacteria can grow quite easily and cause constant infection, despite proper cleaning. There are others who experience chronic pain based on the way the tail is twisted and other still who have a hard time with their normal bodily function because the tail is in the way. It is only in very specific cases that a vet removes a tail and only after other options have been tried to find a solution. Most bulldog parents who report having had to do this procedure say their dog does not seem to miss the appendage and the lack of infection and pain helps them live a happier life. Remember this is a procedure that requires surgery and should only be considered after you have tried all other available options with a bulldog experience vet. 70-80% of bulldogs require some kind of either daily or weekly cleaning in the bum region because of the way theirs tails lay.
