Weve received word from our Nashville correspondent Sharon Cobb that Larry Nenley, lead singer of The Newbeats, just passed away. Born June 30, 1941 in Arp, Texas, Larry formed The Newbeats with brothers Dean and Marc Mathis and scored seven hits between 1964 and 1970 including Everythings Alright, Break Away, Run Baby Run and their biggest, Bread and Butter. which reached #2 in the fall of 1964. Just to show the range of his musical skills, Larry -- whose novelty lead vocal on Bread and Butter made him appear to be a kind of parody of Frankie Vall-styled falsetto, later became the co- writer of a very different kind of pop music: Bette Midlers 1989 #1 hit The Wind Beneath My Wings. https://youtube/watch?v=TOK2taxDppE
