We’ll change House leadership – Rep January 21, 2014 by Success Nwogu #PunchNews The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Zakari Mohammed, has said that there will be major shake-up of the House leadership on Tuesday (today) when the lawmakers resume. He said the changes in the positions would include that of the Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip. Mohammed, who represents Baruten/Kaiama federal constituency, spoke to journalists in Ilorin on Monday. According to him, the changes become inevitable following the defection of 37 members of the House from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. He added that another 10 PDP members of the House were set to defect to the APC. He noted that with the defection, APC would become the party with the highest number of lawmakers in the House. Mohammed said the House would however not replace the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, and his deputy, Emeka Ihedioha. According to him, the two positions are subject to the constitution. He added that as a result the population strength of any political party in the state would not affect their positions. He said, “The speakership and deputy speakership are constitutional positions. You don’t necessarily have to be in the majority to be Speaker in the House. “As it stands today, as I talk to you now, we (APC) have 172 members, PDP has 167 and the rest which is 20 to 22 belongs to the other parties. So for me I believe that by the special grace of God when we resume, we’re going to have other members coming to the APC when the position of the Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip would be repositioned to the APC. “We have about 10 members who are coming into the APC as soon as we resume on Tuesday, January 21.”
